How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks Once and for All!

Motherhood can be one of the most beautiful things a woman experiences, but pregnancy can change your body quite a bit. One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is stretch marks, which can appear anywhere the skin stretches quickly — the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and breasts. Pregnancy is not the only cause, though. Rapid growth spurts, weight changes, muscle gain, and hormonal shifts can all leave the same telltale streaks.

Most women say stretch marks are a small price to pay for a healthy, happy baby, but they can still affect how you feel in your own skin — especially when swimsuit season rolls around. At Pura Vida, we offer several treatments designed to soften and reduce the appearance of stretch marks so you can feel more like yourself again.

What Actually Causes Stretch Marks

A stretch mark, or stria, forms deep in the dermis, the supportive middle layer of skin. When the skin is pulled faster than it can adapt, the collagen and elastin fibers that give it structure tear and reorganize. Fresh stretch marks often look red, pink, or purple (striae rubrae) because the underlying blood vessels are still visible. Over months to years they fade to a silvery-white, slightly sunken scar (striae albae). This timeline matters, because newer, still-colored marks generally respond better to treatment than older white ones.

Can You Really Get Rid of Stretch Marks?

Here is the honest answer: stretch marks are a form of scarring, and no treatment — surgical or non-surgical — can guarantee they disappear completely. What modern skin treatments can do is meaningfully improve their color, texture, and depth so they blend more naturally with the surrounding skin. The goal is a smoother, more even appearance rather than perfection. Results vary from person to person based on skin type, the age of the marks, and how consistently you follow your treatment plan.

RF Microneedling

RF Microneedling is one of our most versatile options for stretch marks. A device creates thousands of tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin while delivering radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermis. That combination triggers the body’s natural repair response, prompting new collagen and elastin production exactly where stretch marks have thinned and disrupted the skin’s structure.

Because the radiofrequency energy heats tissue below the surface, RF microneedling can tighten and remodel skin more deeply than traditional microneedling alone, which works closer to the surface. For deeper or more established marks, we may recommend Morpheus8, which pairs microneedling with radiofrequency to reach the deeper layers of skin. RF microneedling can also be combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to support healing and enhance results. Most people need a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, since collagen remodeling happens gradually.

The SaltFacial™

The SaltFacial™ is a three-step renewal and resurfacing treatment. It uses natural sea salt to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, restores the skin’s natural pH balance, replenishes it with nourishing serums, and finishes with LED phototherapy to calm the skin and support collagen activity.

For stretch marks, the SaltFacial works best as part of a series and is often combined with other treatments such as lasers or chemical peels to enhance overall skin quality. Because it is non-abrasive and involves minimal downtime, it is a comfortable option for those easing into skin resurfacing. We typically recommend a series of treatments spaced over time for the best results.

Plasma IQ Fibroblast

Plasma IQ Fibroblast is another option worth considering. It uses the PlasmaIQ™ device to create precise micro-injuries across the skin’s surface with plasma energy, which stimulates the body’s natural healing process and encourages collagen and elastin production.

Along with improving stretch marks, Plasma IQ works to tighten and tone the skin and can double as an effective scar treatment for other types of scarring. You can read more about how Plasma IQ Fibroblast works in our detailed guide. Some people notice changes fairly soon, with results continuing to improve over roughly 8 to 12 weeks as new collagen forms.

Are You a Good Candidate?

The best candidates are generally healthy adults with realistic expectations who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Newer, still-colored stretch marks tend to respond most readily, though older marks can still improve with a consistent plan. Certain skin conditions, active infections, a history of keloid scarring, or some medications may affect whether a particular treatment is right for you. The only way to know which approach fits your skin is a professional evaluation, so we always start with a consultation.

What to Expect and How to Care for Your Skin

Most of these treatments involve little to no significant downtime, though it is normal to have some redness, warmth, or mild swelling for a day or two afterward, similar to a light sunburn. Afterward, keep the area clean, moisturized, and well protected. Daily sunscreen is essential, because healing skin is especially vulnerable to pigment changes from sun exposure. Staying hydrated and avoiding harsh products for a few days helps your skin recover. Because collagen builds slowly, the full benefit of a treatment series often becomes visible over several weeks to a few months.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

If you are not sure which option fits your goals, we would be happy to see you for a consultation, where one of our skilled providers can assess your skin and help you choose the approach most likely to give you the results you want. Motherhood requires plenty of sacrifices, but your confidence doesn’t have to be one of them — we’re here to help you look and feel your best again.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered

Can stretch marks be completely removed?

No treatment can guarantee that stretch marks disappear entirely, because they are a form of scarring in the deeper layers of skin. Non-surgical treatments can noticeably improve their color, texture, and depth so they blend more naturally with the surrounding skin. Your results depend on your skin type, the age of the marks, and how consistently you follow your treatment plan.

How many treatments will I need?

Most stretch mark treatments work best as a series rather than a single session. The exact number depends on the treatment you choose, the severity of the marks, and how your skin responds. Your provider will recommend a specific plan during your consultation.

Do stretch mark treatments hurt?

Comfort varies by treatment and by person. Topical numbing is often used for microneedling-based options to keep you comfortable, and treatments like the SaltFacial are generally gentle. Some redness or a warm, sunburn-like feeling afterward is normal and usually fades within a day or two.

Is there any downtime after stretch mark treatment?

Most of these treatments involve little to no significant downtime. You may have some redness, warmth, or mild swelling for a day or two while your skin heals. Daily sunscreen is important during recovery, and your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions.

Can I treat stretch marks while pregnant or breastfeeding?

These treatments are generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We usually suggest waiting until after that period, once your body and skin have stabilized. A consultation can help you plan the right time to begin.
