Treatment Overview
A Swedish or relaxation massage uses light, gliding strokes to calm the whole body. Deep tissue massage is a different tool: slower, firmer, more deliberate pressure that reaches the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue where real tension lives. It’s built for guests carrying chronic tightness, not guests simply looking to unwind.
An active life takes a toll. Everyday tension, sports-related stiffness, and long hours on your feet settle into the same few spots: shoulders, low back, and forearms. Our therapist works those spots with firm, targeted pressure. It’s tailored to what your body needs that day, not just a stronger version of a relaxation massage. Take a look at the full Day Spa lineup for the other ways we help you move easier.
For a gentler session, our Swedish massage, prenatal massage, and lymphatic massage each take a different approach.
Who It Helps
Each session is built around what your body is carrying, not a set routine.
Tennis, golf, running, and other activity can leave shoulders, forearms, and low backs locked up. Deep tissue works into that tightness with firm, targeted pressure.
Long hours on your feet, repetitive movement at work, or physical tasks around the house add up in the same few spots: neck, shoulders, and low back. This is where deep tissue goes to work.
Long-standing knots, stiff spots, and old injury patterns respond well to sustained, firmer pressure that a lighter relaxation massage doesn’t reach.
Runners, lifters, and weekend athletes use deep tissue to stay ahead of tightness before it turns into an injury, working the muscle groups carrying the most load.
Add-On Treatments
Any of these can be added to your deep tissue massage the same visit, at no extra time for aromatherapy.
Focused scalp and head massage to relax and de-stress before or after your main session.
Warmed stones layered into your session to ease tension and deepen relaxation, a natural pairing with deep tissue work.
Targeted therapy to relieve sinus pressure and the jaw tension and pain of TMJ.
A therapeutic percussion device incorporated into the session for extra relief in stubborn spots.
Suction-based technique that decompresses muscle tension and releases trigger points.
A sea-salt scrub with shea butter body cream on your hands, feet, or back.
Natural oils layered into your session to elevate relaxation, at no extra time.
Fleming Island · Northeast Florida
Fleming Island rarely slows down. Pickleball and tennis at Eagle Harbor, a round of golf, a day boating on Doctors Lake, or an afternoon of yard work in the Florida heat all leave muscles tight, sore, and overworked. Deep tissue massage is the firm, targeted work that helps that tension let go, whether you’re managing a nagging old injury, recovering from a hard week of training, or simply carrying more tension than you realized. Our therapist tailors pressure and technique to what your body is actually dealing with, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
Northeast Florida’s UV index climbs to extreme from spring through late summer, and sun exposure drives much of the collagen loss and visible aging we treat, so care here is as much about prevention as it is about correction.
The Day Spa at Eagle Harbor carries its own 4.9-star rating from real guests, inside a genuine day-spa building overlooking the Eagle Harbor pond, a mile from our Medical Spa at Island Lane.
Serving
The Pura Vida Approach
Every deep tissue massage at Pura Vida is placed by a licensed massage therapist who asks about your trouble spots, your activity level, and your pressure preference before your first session, then adjusts technique to what your body needs that day, whether that’s a nagging spot from the golf course or general tension that’s built up over weeks.
You feel that same care across the whole Day Spa, so your session is built around the muscles you actually came in with, not a stopwatch. And if deep tissue isn’t the honest answer for what you’re carrying, we’ll tell you straight and point you toward a gentler session.
Is This For You?
These are informational guardrails, not a diagnosis. When in doubt, check with your doctor before booking, and tell us about any health conditions so we can tailor or postpone your session.
Ready to Start?
Book an appointment and our licensed massage therapist tailors a deep tissue session around the tight, overworked muscles your active Fleming Island life leaves behind.
Our Process
Your session starts with a few minutes talking through what’s bothering you: a nagging spot from sport, a sore low back, or general tension that’s built up over weeks. Your therapist tailors pressure and focus from there.
Deep tissue uses slower, firmer strokes than a classic relaxation massage. Your therapist works into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release chronic tightness rather than just smoothing over the surface.
Ask to layer in cupping, a massage gun, scalp work, or aromatherapy the same visit, at no extra time for aromatherapy.
Drink water and give your body a day before a hard workout or heavy activity. Some tenderness afterward is normal, similar to a tough workout, and typically eases within a day or two.

"So relaxed right now. It was so good I literally fell asleep during the massage. Will definitely be back."

Frequently Asked Questions
A deep tissue massage uses firm, deliberate pressure to work into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, releasing chronic tension, breaking up stubborn knots, and easing the tightness that pickleball, golf, boating, or a week of yard work in the heat can leave behind. At Pura Vida’s Day Spa, our licensed massage therapist tailors that pressure to what your body is actually carrying that day.
Deep tissue uses firmer pressure than a classic relaxation massage, so it isn’t the right fit for everyone. Some guests feel a bit sore for a day or two afterward, similar to a hard workout, and it isn’t recommended if you’re managing acute inflammation, a recent injury, or recovering from surgery. If a gentler session is what you need, our lymphatic or Swedish massage is the better starting point.
It depends on what you’re working through. Guests managing ongoing tension from an active lifestyle, weekly pickleball, golf, or physical work, often come every few weeks to stay ahead of it. Others book around a specific flare-up or a big event. Your therapist can help you land on how often to come in once they know what you’re dealing with.
A Swedish or relaxation massage uses lighter, gliding strokes meant to calm the whole body. Deep tissue uses slower, firmer, more targeted pressure to reach the deeper muscle layers and chronic tight spots that a lighter touch won’t move, which is why it’s the better choice for real tension rather than pure relaxation.
Give your body a day before a hard workout, a long round of golf, or heavy yard work, and drink plenty of water. Some soreness is normal and usually eases within a day or two. A warm shower can help, but skip strenuous activity right afterward so the muscles have time to settle.
