Health Benefits of Dry Salt Therapy (Halotherapy)

Spending some time by the seaside not only boosts your mood, but it can also help alleviate the symptoms of different ailments. You have probably heard about the benefits of salt water before, but do you know anything about dry salt therapy? It provides the same benefits as the salty sea air does - but it packs a bigger punch.

Dry salt therapy is also known as halotherapy ( halo means salt in Greek), and it’s an alternative treatment that consists of spending time inside a man-made salt cave. Breathing in salty air has long been known to have many benefits on the respiratory tract.

During a halotherapy session, you’ll go inside a humidity-free salt cave. The temperature inside these caves is usually around 68°F (20°C) or even lower. Inside the salt cave, a halogenator crushes pure grade 99% sodium chloride salt crystals into small particles for inhalation. Different types of salt, such as sea salt and Himalayan salt, contain up to 84 different trace elements that are found naturally in our bodies. Even 45 minutes in our #saltcave can improve your allergy symptoms!

The salty air has many health benefits. Dry salt therapy is a non-invasive, drug & chemical free way to treat your allergies. There are many ways in which the salty air can alleviate your symptoms. For starters, salt is able to reduce inflammation in your airways and clear out your nasal passageways by breaking up mucus. This makes halotherapy an effective way to relieve bronchial problems. It can also help you get over a cold faster.

Halotherapy has been shown to trigger anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy responses in people with chronic respiratory conditions, and it can even improve the quality of life for these patients. In addition to allergies, dry salt therapy can also be used to alleviate other conditions, such as:

  • Asthma
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Ear infections
  • Rhinitis
  • Smoking-related symptoms such as coughing and wheezing
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Sinus congestion

Different studies have shown that patients with different respiratory ailments can breathe more easily after a halotherapy session.

Salt also produces negative ions, which have been theorized to help your body produce serotonin. This chemical is one of the key elements to happiness, which is why halotherapy has been proposed as an alternative treatment for depression and anxiety. his effect can also reduce stress, combat fatigue, and improve sleep.

Halotherapy is also beneficial to your immune and lymphatic systems. Additionally, it can improve skin conditions, including eczema, acne, rosacea, rashes, and psoriasis. Natural sea salt in its purest form actually has hydrating and antibacterial properties which can support your skin’s hydration and water balance. Salts also contain magnesium, which is beneficial to our skin, improving skin barrier and inflammation. Halotherapy for the skin can provide wonderful benefits!

We know what you’re thinking. How can dry salt therapy alleviate so many conditions? Well, sodium chloride - the scientific name for salt - actually plays a vital role in regulating your body’s physiological functions. Salt helps to detoxify and remove impurities from our bodies, which are then excreted through ion exchange.

Halotherapy is even safe for children. A 2017 pediatric study showed that children with mild asthma showed a decrease in bronchial hyperreactivity after attending two halotherapy sessions per week for seven weeks. Since halotherapy is non-invasive and drug-free, it is considered to be safe for people of any age. It can also be used as a complementary treatment, alongside any medications that you need to take.

If you suffer from a respiratory or skin condition, have been bogged down by a cold or flu, are experiencing fatigue or stress, or if you simply want to try out a new wellness therapy, dry salt therapy could be exactly what you need. Call us to book your session today!
