Treatment Overview
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. The handpiece delivers broad-spectrum light that is absorbed by two things at once: the melanin, or brown pigment, in sun spots, and the hemoglobin behind diffuse redness and fine vessels. Once that light is absorbed, the body clears the treated pigment and calms the vessels, so over a short series the skin reads more even. It is how we address the photodamage that years under the Florida sun tend to leave behind.
IPL is best suited to lighter and medium skin tones. On deeper skin tones, broad-spectrum light is less effective and carries a higher risk of pigment change, so for deeper tones we use a 1064 nm laser such as Aerolase instead. Which tool is right for you is a decision we make together, part of our full pigmentation and redness program, and we will tell you honestly when IPL is not the right answer for your skin.
Common Concerns
A photofacial does its clearest work on sun-driven pigment and background redness. Each concern is treated to the degree it needs, and the result develops gradually across a series as the body clears the pigment and the vessels settle.
The scattered brown marks that years of Florida sun leave across the cheeks, forehead, and hands. IPL is absorbed by the pigment in these spots so the body can gradually clear it and even out the tone.
The background flush across the cheeks and nose that comes and goes with heat, sun, and flushing. Broad-spectrum light targets the redness so the skin reads calmer and more even over a series.
Fine visible vessels and the patchy, mottled look of sun-weathered skin. IPL treats the vessels and the pigment together, which is why it is our go-to for overall photodamage on suitable skin tones.
IPL is often combined with skin and injectable treatments for an integrated plan, which your provider can walk through at your consultation.
Fleming Island · Northeast Florida
Sun damage is the concern our outdoor, boating Fleming Island patients ask about most: the brown spots and background redness that extreme UV leaves across the face and hands. IPL is what we reach for on suitable skin tones, delivered by a team that will tell you honestly when it will help, when a different laser fits your skin better, and how to protect the result once you have it.
Northeast Florida’s UV index climbs to extreme from spring through late summer, and sun exposure drives much of the collagen loss and visible aging we treat, so care here is as much about prevention as it is about correction.
The practice Fleming Island trusts for advanced skin care. Voted the area’s best medspa six years running, a Lumenis Center of Excellence, cared for from our Medical Spa on Island Lane.
Serving
The Pura Vida Approach
Every IPL photofacial at Pura Vida begins with an honest look at your skin tone, because IPL is right for some skin and not others. If your skin is a good candidate, an experienced provider sets the device conservatively and treats across a sensible series. If it is not, we say so and point you to a 1064 nm laser instead.
That is the difference between chasing a machine and getting care from a team that treats IPL as one part of a plan, part of our full lasers and devices program built around your skin and how it responds.
Is This For You?
If IPL is not the right tool for your skin, we will tell you honestly and point you toward what is, whether that is a different laser or a referral. Declining a treatment that would not serve you is part of how we work.

Our Process
Every plan begins with an unhurried consult here in Fleming Island, and with an honest look at your skin tone. IPL is best suited to lighter and medium skin, so if your skin is deeper we will tell you plainly and guide you toward a 1064 nm laser such as Aerolase instead of pushing a treatment that could cause pigment change.
Your provider maps the pigment and redness worth treating, explains what a course of IPL can realistically do, and sets a sensible number of sessions. IPL works best as a short series rather than a single visit, and we set that expectation up front.
The handpiece delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light that the brown pigment and the redness absorb. Most patients describe it as a quick warm snap. Expect mild flushing for a few hours, and sun spots that darken to a coffee-ground look for several days before they flake away.
Because Florida sun is what drives the pigment in the first place, daily SPF is not optional if you want the result to hold. We send you home with clear aftercare, photograph your progress, and follow up so we can space the series correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
IPL and Botox treat completely different concerns, so one is not simply better than the other. IPL uses broad-spectrum light to clear sun spots and calm diffuse redness, while Botox relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles such as lines around the eyes and across the forehead. If your main concern is uneven tone, sun spots, or redness, IPL is the right tool. If it is dynamic wrinkles, Botox is. Many patients combine the two as part of a broader plan, since evening out skin tone and softening expression lines address different layers of aging.
IPL is safe and effective on lighter to medium skin tones, but we do not recommend it for deeper skin tones because broad-spectrum light is less effective there and carries a higher risk of pigment change. If your skin is deeper, we use a 1064 nm laser such as Aerolase instead, which reaches the same sun spots and redness more safely. Your provider assesses your skin tone honestly at the consultation and recommends the right tool rather than defaulting to IPL for everyone.
The main downside of IPL is a few visible days of purging: treated sun spots typically darken to a coffee-ground look for several days before they flake away, and you may have light flushing for a few hours right after treatment. That darkening is the treatment working, pigment rising to the surface to shed, not a complication, though it does mean planning the visible days around your calendar. Most people return to their normal routine immediately, trading a short cosmetic downtime for pigment and redness clearance that would otherwise take much longer to fade on its own.
Most patients need a short series of three to five IPL sessions spaced a few weeks apart, rather than one aggressive visit, to clear sun spots and redness evenly. Pigment and redness respond gradually, and pacing the series over several weeks gives a more even result than trying to force it in a single treatment. Your provider sets the exact number at your consultation based on how much sun damage and redness there is to treat.
IPL clears the sun spots and redness that are already on your skin, but it is not a permanent fix because it cannot prevent new sun damage from forming under the Jacksonville area sun, where the UV index reaches an extreme 10 to 11 from April through August. Since up to roughly 80 percent of visible facial aging comes from UV exposure, new spots and redness will accumulate again without daily SPF, so we treat IPL as an ongoing part of skin care rather than a one-time fix. We plan a maintenance rhythm with you and are honest that protecting your results matters as much as the treatment itself.
