Medical Weight Loss in Jacksonville: How a Supervised Program Works
What medically supervised weight loss involves near Jacksonville: the screening, the program options including non-injectable Thinnr, and monthly support.

Many patients come to a medical weight-loss consultation after trying diets, tracking, and restriction on their own. A supervised program is different because a clinician screens your health first to find out why weight loss has been difficult for you before recommending a treatment.
What “Medical” Adds
A commercial diet program gives you a plan. A medical program starts with a clinician and a health screening.
At Pura Vida, the process is: review your health history, screen for underlying issues, choose the program together, and follow up monthly. Both the initial screening and the monthly follow-up are essential to long-term results.
Screening matters because thyroid dysfunction, hormone shifts during perimenopause, insulin resistance, and certain medications can make weight loss harder regardless of effort. If one of these is the underlying cause, our hormone replacement and menopause treatment programs may be more effective for you than any weight-loss treatment.
The Program Options
We offer several program options because patients have different needs.
GLP-1 class medications. Prescribed and monitored by our nurse practitioners after a full health screening. We do not list a specific brand-name drug because the medication and dose are chosen with you at your consultation. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has a plain-language overview of prescription medications to treat overweight and obesity for background reading.
Thinnr. Our non-injectable program, often used for patients who are not candidates for a GLP-1 or prefer not to take one.
Phentermine. An appetite-suppression medication with a long clinical history. It is appropriate for specific patients and is monitored throughout treatment.
Lipotropic injections. Sometimes called skinny shots. These support metabolism and energy alongside your primary program.
See our medical weight loss page for details. Which option fits you is decided at your consultation.
What the First Visit Looks Like
Most of the visit is conversation: your medical history, prior weight-loss attempts, current medications, family history, and your goals. Your goal may be more than a number on the scale, and we want the program to match what you actually want.
Screening comes next, followed by a discussion of which program fits you. You should leave the consultation understanding your plan. If anything is unclear, ask before you agree to it.
Why Monthly Follow-Up Matters
Monthly follow-up is central to a supervised program. At each visit we check how you are tolerating the plan, adjust anything that is not working, and monitor for the loss of momentum that often happens around month four.
We also cover the factors that keep weight off long term: protein intake, resistance training, sleep, and managing the muscle loss that can occur during rapid weight loss. Patients who skip monthly visits are more likely to regain weight.
After significant weight loss, some patients notice loose skin. Our body contouring and skin tightening treatments can address this. We recommend waiting until your weight has stabilized before starting either.

Frequently Asked Questions
Medical Weight Loss Questions, Answered
Where can I get medical weight loss near Jacksonville, FL?
Pura Vida offers medical weight loss at our Medical Spa on Island Lane in Fleming Island, FL, about twenty minutes south of downtown Jacksonville. We serve Orange Park, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, and greater Clay County. Kara Wilfong, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, leads the program with our patient care team.
What is the difference between medical weight loss and a diet program?
A diet program gives you a plan. A medical program starts with a clinician who screens your health history and labs, checks for issues like thyroid or hormone imbalance, matches you to a treatment that fits your body, and monitors you over time. The main difference is clinical supervision.
Do I have to take medication to join the program?
No. Some patients are not candidates for medication and others prefer not to take it. Our Thinnr program is non-injectable, and lipotropic injections are another option. Your program is chosen at your consultation.
How much weight will I lose?
It depends on your starting weight, your physiology, the program you and your provider choose, and how consistently you engage with monthly follow-up. We give you a realistic range at your consultation.
Do you check for thyroid or hormone problems first?
Yes. Screening is part of intake because an untreated thyroid or hormone issue can make weight loss significantly harder. If that is the underlying cause, treating it is the right approach, which is why our hormone programs run alongside the weight-loss program.
