What a Lip Flip Actually Does

Botulinum toxins such as Xeomin, Botox, and Jeuveau relax muscle. When a small dose is placed along the upper lip border, it relaxes the orbicularis oris, the ring of muscle that circles your mouth and pulls the lip edge inward and downward.

With that muscle softened, the edge of the lip rolls slightly outward. More of the pink of your lip becomes visible, and the result reads as a fuller, poutier upper lip. Nothing has been added and your lip has not grown. It is showing more of itself.

That is also why the effect is subtle. A lip flip is measured in a few units, not in syringes, and it works within the boundaries of the lip you already have.

Lip Flip vs. Dermal Filler

These two treatments are frequently discussed together and they are not interchangeable.

A lip filler treatment injects hyaluronic acid into the lip body. That adds physical volume, so the lip becomes genuinely larger and its shape can be adjusted, balanced, or built out where it is thin. A lip flip changes none of that. It relaxes a muscle so the existing lip presents differently.

Filler also lasts substantially longer, generally six to twelve months against the two to three months of a flip. The trade-off is commitment. A flip gives you a low-stakes look at a fuller upper lip, and if you decide you want more, filler is still available.

Who a Lip Flip Suits

The treatment tends to work well if you are:

What Happens at Your Appointment

The appointment itself is short. Your provider looks at your lip at rest and while you smile, marks the placement along the upper lip border, and places a small number of injections into the muscle just above the lip line. Most patients describe a quick pinch rather than pain, and numbing is available if you would rather have it.

Afterwards you can go back to your day. Keep your fingers off the area, skip strenuous exercise until the next day, and avoid lying flat for a few hours. Minor swelling or a small bruise at an injection point is normal and settles quickly.

Timing, Results, and How Long It Lasts

Results begin appearing two to ten days after treatment, depending on which product was used and how your muscles respond. Plan for the full effect to settle within about two weeks, which is the interval to build in if you are treating ahead of an event.

From there, most patients hold the result for two to three months and repeat as it fades. Because the lip flip uses the same products as the rest of the wrinkle relaxers category, many patients simply add it to an existing Botox appointment rather than booking a separate visit.
