Have you been considering dermal fillers or another aesthetic treatment but held back because you’re worried about pain? At Pura Vida Medspa in Fleming Island, we take that worry seriously. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, and a real fear of needles doesn’t go away just because you want the results. That’s why we offer Pro-Nox for injectables, non-surgical facelifts, lasers, microneedling, non-surgical lipo, and more.
What Is Pro-Nox?
The Pro-Nox machine delivers a 50/50 blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, for quick relief from pain and anxiety. This gas mixture is safe and has been used for decades in dental offices. Many of our treatments already include topical or local numbing, and adding Pro-Nox makes patients even more comfortable on top of that.
Because the gas leaves your system almost as quickly as it takes effect, Pro-Nox doesn’t carry the grogginess or longer recovery window that comes with oral sedatives. That makes it practical for a lunchtime appointment or a visit squeezed between other plans, since you’re not losing the rest of your day to feeling out of it.
How Pro-Nox Compares to Topical Numbing
Topical and local numbing work on the skin itself: they block sensation at the specific site being treated, whether that’s a lip about to receive filler or a patch of skin heading into a laser. Pro-Nox works on a different layer entirely. Instead of numbing tissue, it changes how your whole body processes pain signals and anxiety for the few minutes you’re inhaling it.
That’s why the two pair well together instead of competing. Numbing handles the physical sensation at the injection or treatment site, while Pro-Nox handles the nervous, tense feeling that can make even a well-numbed area feel harder to sit through. Patients who have tried both often say the combination makes the biggest difference, more than either option used alone.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before and during your session, you hold the Pro-Nox delivery tube in your own hand. You decide how much and how often to inhale based on how you’re feeling. It’s entirely patient-controlled; nobody is dosing you from the outside. Most people describe a feeling of euphoria and relaxation, and many report feeling happy or even giggly, which is where the “laughing gas” nickname comes from.
The breathing tubes, hoses, and nose clips are individually wrapped and single-use for every patient, so there’s no concern about contamination. You’ll place the tube to your mouth and take six to eight deep breaths to get the full effect. That effect lasts about 8 to 10 minutes, so you don’t need to breathe through the tube continuously.
Can You Drive After Using Pro-Nox?
Pro-Nox clears the body quickly. Most patients feel back to their normal selves within 5 to 10 minutes of stopping the gas, which is one of the reasons it’s such a popular option compared to oral sedation. That said, follow whatever guidance your provider gives you on the day of treatment, and if you feel even slightly foggy afterward, arrange a ride rather than getting behind the wheel. It’s a sensible precaution, not a sign that something went wrong.
Which Treatments Pair Well With Pro-Nox
Because Pro-Nox is so safe, it works with nearly any treatment that creates anxiety or discomfort. Here are the ones patients ask for it with most often:
- Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport
- Dermal fillers, including lip filler
- Sculptra®
- Microneedling
- Kybella
- Non-surgical lipo (fat reduction)
- QWO
- Non-surgical BBL
- Laser skin resurfacing
Pro-Nox tends to help two kinds of patients the most: people who feel a real spike of anxiety at the sight of a needle, and people stacking multiple treatments into one visit, where the cumulative discomfort of several injections or passes adds up faster than any single one would on its own. If either describes you, it’s worth asking about at your next appointment, even if you’ve never needed extra comfort measures before.
Is Pro-Nox Right for You?
Pro-Nox typically produces a mild state of euphoria, and in rare cases patients experience hallucinations, headaches, or nausea; these symptoms dissipate within about 5 minutes of stopping the gas. Most people tolerate it very well, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone. Providers commonly hold off on Pro-Nox for patients who are pregnant, have certain lung conditions, have an untreated vitamin B12 deficiency, or have had recent ear or eye surgery, since pressure changes from the gas can interfere with healing in those cases. Our clinical team reviews your medical history before your appointment to confirm it’s safe for you.
If you’re interested in adding Pro-Nox to your next treatment, mention it when booking your appointment so we can have everything prepared when you arrive. It adds a flat $45 to your total treatment cost, which makes it a genuinely affordable way to get more comfortable care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pro-Nox Questions, Answered
What is Pro-Nox used for?
Pro-Nox is used to take the edge off pain and anxiety during cosmetic treatments like Botox and dermal fillers, microneedling, laser resurfacing, and non-surgical body contouring. It's a 50/50 blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide, the same gas dental offices have used safely for decades.
How is Pro-Nox different from topical numbing cream?
Topical numbing dulls sensation at the skin's surface, in the specific area it's applied. Pro-Nox works differently: it reduces how your whole body registers pain and anxiety, independent of where the treatment is happening. The two are often used together rather than as alternatives, since numbing handles the injection site while Pro-Nox handles the nerves.
Can you drive after using Pro-Nox?
Most patients feel back to normal within 5 to 10 minutes of stopping the gas, since it clears the body quickly. Even so, follow your provider's guidance for that day, and arrange a ride if you feel at all foggy. It's a reasonable precaution rather than a strict requirement for most patients.
Who should not use Pro-Nox?
Pro-Nox isn't right for everyone. Common reasons a provider may say no include pregnancy, certain lung conditions, untreated vitamin B12 deficiency, and recent ear or eye surgery, since changes in pressure from the gas can affect healing in those areas. Our clinical team reviews your medical history before offering it.
Does Pro-Nox cost extra?
Yes, Pro-Nox adds a flat $45 to your treatment cost. Mention it when booking your appointment so we can have everything ready when you arrive.
