BOTOX can make a significant improvement to dynamic and static lines, which are made from expressive movement from the muscles contracting, particularly on the forehead and around the eyes. The lines disappear as the face relaxes, but dynamic folds can still exist for those that do not want the "frozen" look. BOTOX is a clean and purified strain of botulinum toxin (type A) that temporarily blocks the movements of the facial muscle. To soften the dynamic wrinkles, BOTOX is injected, which smooths the skin. BOTOX injections are applied between the eyebrows, the "Crow's feet," and across the forehead and is sometimes used in the lower face to soften vertical lip lines and chin dimpling. It can also be used to reduce a "gummy smile," to stop teeth grinding/clenching, contour the face, lifting the brows, and to reduce the appearance of platysmal bands in the neck.

BOTOX is great for individuals who desire to soften the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles on their face without surgery. BOTOX can also be used as a preventative treatment even if you do not show signs of aging — keep in mind how often you tend to make facial expressions. It's a terrific nonsurgical treatment if you are frustrated by forehead lines or parallel lines between the brows. It also a solution for the area of lines around the eyes. If you have deeper lines that exist regardless of facial movement, a filler product may be more suitable. 

BOTOX treatments are done as an outpatient procedure conveniently in our office. If it is your first time to visit us for BOTOX, your injector typically performs the BOTOX injections the same day as your consultation. You will be asked to make several facial expressions with the upper face, like squinting, frowning, etc., which will help to visualize where the injections should be placed. The treatment area will be cleansed and BOTOX will be injected with a fine needle, followed by gentle compressions placed to help minimize discomfort and bruising. Patients may ask for an ice pack or numbing cream to make their treatment feel more comfortable, but this generally is unnecessary. BOTOX treatments typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, then patients are able resume to their normal routine as soon as they feel able.

After the procedure, patients can get back to their regular routine, but strenuous activity should be skipped for at least one day. Patients are also asked to sleep with their head elevated for the first night and to not touch their face, which may accidentally spread the treatment to other areas. The treated areas of the face may be slightly swollen, bruised, or red for 2 – 3 days after the procedure, but most patients will not develop any lasting or serious side effects from injectable treatments. In many patients, it typically takes about 5 – 7 days before the full effects of BOTOX can be seen. The results usually last 3 – 4 months. Our patients who receive BOTOX for their first time are so happy after their first treatment and excited after seeing their results that we almost always continue to see them every few months for their touch-up.
